Variations of a computer. What’s a brand new, used and refurbished computer?
When buying a computer, most people are lost on exactly the kind of computer to buy.
What most people do not know when buying a computer in Kenya is that computers are categorized into three main variations: Brand new, Used/Ex-UK and Refurbished computers.
Depending on your budget and your needs you can decide the best type of computer to get. We’ll let you know of the main differences in the three categories of computers.
Brand New Computers
Brand new computers come directly from the manufacturer. They are categorized into channel and grey.
Channel distribution consists of authorized support partners, authorized resellers and authorized parts partners who have local and global warranty.
Grey– These are products being sold in non-authorized distribution channels and have global warranty only (like the way someone can purchase a product from Europe or USA)
A brand new computer may be a better choice if you need more space because most refurbished computers might come with a 2 GB RAM while a new computer will have a 4 GB Ram or more.
And also if you are a gamer a brand new computer will work for you as they come with improved components which will give you the ultimate gaming experience.
Used/Ex-UK computers
These are computers that are pre-owned and sold in their current condition and have a short warranty.
The difference between used computers and refurbished computers is that refurbished computers are disassembled and checked for any damages which are repaired before they are resold while a used laptop doesn’t undergo this process, they are sold as they are.
Refurbished computers
These are computers that have been returned to the retailer and manufacturer due to a slight defects which are repaired or replaced before they can be resold again. They have a local warranty if it is channel based.
Refurbished computers have hardware components that are new, therefore the computer can last as long as a brand new one.
The prices of the refurbished laptops are usually discounted between 10 to 25 percent or more from the original price. With the refurbished computers the size of the hard drive might differ with a new laptop. For instance a refurbished computer might have a 320 GB hard drive while a new computer will have 500 GB hard drive.
So if you are on a budget then you might want to consider refurbished computers.
